Spring shows great promise!

Yes, we know it is not even Autumn 2008 yet, but the world of fashion is one step ahead  of the sun.  So that readers of The Clotheshound stay ahead too, here’s a look at the in’s and out’s coming this Spring 2009.

Color
Making the rounds of the recent shows in New York and Las Vegas it was immediately apparent that color has made a return. Not the bright colors of a couple of years ago, but almost. And that’s a good thing because the colors of yesteryear were too bright. Now we see a brightness which is
both wearable and understandable. Blues, lilacs, spring greens, melons and pinks seem to predominate. And these are colors that almost anyone can wear.

Details matter
With the business environment a bit challenging at the moment, everyone seemed to work harder on differentiating their merchandise in small ways. Sport shirts carried details such as contrast trim inside collars and cuffs. Paisley, checks and stripes added flair to solid and softly patterned shirts.

Button, button, what color are the buttons?

Button, button, what color are the buttons?

Contrasting or complementing thread colors were used for buttons and button holes. Outerwear and soft sport coats had contrasting linings which added the right amount of pizzazz! All of this was done in a subtle and tasteful way to enhance the garments.

Retro is the new new.
Think seventies madras, seersucker and tie dyed looks. The booths with the biggest crowds all had plenty to offer in this arena. Older buyers remember it and love it; younger buyers thought it was all the rage. Plain front madras shorts and pants. Seersucker shorts with contrasting seersucker waistbands. Tie dyed cotton t-shirts and batik print sport shirts. Easy to understand and from this buyer’s perspective (Yes, I’ve seen it before.) so old it’s new again!

Men can only handle a little change.
At least when it comes to clothes. The net result? Spring will be exciting but not over the top. Understandable, easy to wear colors which won’t fall out of fashion the next season. And silhouettes which are familar to almost everyone. That should lead to a good season for sellers and clotheshounds alike!
